SCAM SMS - R8000 Shopping voucher

Earlier on this evening I received a spam SMS from this number +2782007229449899 claiming that My cell number has been selected to receive an R8000-00 Pick an Pay Shopping voucher.

The spam SMS provides a link to a fake Facebook page with fake Facebook user accounts (People) commenting that they too have received the SMS and were luck enough to win shopping vouchers after they spun the wheel of fortune that they collected and spent on groceries.

Clicking the link takes you to "Wheel of Fortune" Facebook page, where you will be enticed to spin the wheel after reading the comments of other people who have won or have come close to winning. On closer inspection if you try clicking on the users commenting on the "Wheel of Fortune" page you will notice that they are dead links, this should be one of the many signs that you need to leave the page.

If however, you did not heed all the blatant warnings and you spun the wheel anyway, the final page just before you are about to claim your prize will ask you to Spread the word on Whatsapp to at least 10 of your friends in order to claim your prize. There is also a countdown timer, that doesn't time out but resets itself back to 250 seconds if you do not click on anything.

Pick and Pay have put out a notice on their facebook page this evening, distancing themselves from
the Spam SMS and warning customers not to disclose any personal information and that Pick n Pay will never ask its customers for banking details to enter a competition especially via SMS.

If you are tired of tele marketers, receiving spam sms and or any marketing related sms that you did not sign up for, you can de-register yourself from any company who has illegally received your information from consumer databases at The DMA National OPT OUT Database

Registering on this database will mean that you will not be contacted by members of the DMA  (Direct Marketing Association of Southern Africa).

This helps you to make sure your address, email address, telephone and cell number are no longer available to organisations, who are members of the DMA, who want to make offers and send information that you do not wish to receive. You can also do this by contacting companies directly and asking them not to contact you.

You can also report Spam/ Malicious SMS's to (WASPA) Wireless Application Service Providers Assocation
