The Death of Superman Lives - What Happened
For those unfamiliar with this documentary’s topic, Warner Bros. set out to make a film called Superman Lives, based in part of the comic book story The Death of Superman. The film would tell the story of Superman’s death and rebirth in a story starring Nicolas Cage as Superman, Christopher Walken as Brainiac (yes, seriously), and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. The original script was written by Kevin Smith, and the film was to be directed by Tim Burton. Alas, Superman Lives was never made for a myriad of reasons that you will be able to find out about in the Documentary that intricately provides the unfiltered perspective of everybody involved in the project.
I can’t help but wish Burton and Cage had been able to make their film as it could have been really interesting and might have reignited the franchise years before Bryan Singer and Zack Snyder eventually made their versions. Tim Burton brings to all of his movies a very dark complex and personal reality that I think Superman needed but audiences at that time were not ready for.
It’s nice that Schnepp (The Director) was able to set the record straight here. I think that Nic Cage would've made an amazing Superman, even though he was at the height of his fame, he played all his roles with meticulous attention to detail and with Tim Burtons direction, he would've definitely brought out a side of superman we've never seen or ever will .
This is a pretty fascinating investigation into a film that came within three weeks of shooting. With Batman Vs Superman on its way, Man of Steel didn't very little to establish the heroic personality that should've inspired and resonated with the audience. Henry Cavills performance felt scripted and often times very wooden. I'm hoping that he has more to offer in Batman Vs Superman.
